Long Beach

Saturday, June 10

The clippings here bring no new set details, but the independent costuming descriptions are certainly colorful and consistent.  We also find a reference to closed-circuit broadcast of the stage action, something that will be reported again in Los Angeles and San Diego.  Were these live arena television feeds also taped by the operators?  If so, do the recordings remain preserved somewhere, perhaps in the promoter’s private cache?

Jagger: “For one thing, Jagger, who had been wearing a blue work shirt or other modest apparel, switched in Long Beach to a flashy silver-lame tuxedo jacket, and seemed to gain a greater air of theatricality from the move.”

Jagger: “a vision in purple-sequined, one-piece, membrane-thin silk jumpsuit, spangled and jangled, with red glitter eye makeup, with sashes and scarves and a white satin cutaway”

Jagger: “wearing what looked like a silver, sequined suit”

Opening: Stevie Wonder

Jagger: “hip-length purple-sequined coat” and “white body-suit”

Jagger: “pink lame jacket trimmed and bound in black” and “platinum-white lame jersey jumpsuit” with

“a gold neck scarf, a pale violet sash, and a gold leather cumberbund/belt, which appeared to be encrusted with sets and shiny stones”

Melody Maker: “Mick dressed to kill this time in his satin and sheen.”

Charles Bukowski, LA Free Press: “Here he was, Mick Jagger. A little blue star pasted near each eye. An outfit on like your hip spade dude would be wearing tomorrow morning. His joint was showing through his tight hot jism pants, and he was dressed to fuck the world, but basically he had style, the style that comes with champions. I liked him right off and at the same time I thought, why does he have to fuck himself up like that?”

Daily Bruin: “Under the jumpsuit was a mysterious protrusion that was too jiggley to be a codpiece but too pronounced to be a cock. Maybe it was a new English invention for pop stars to invest in instead of stuffing socks.”

Long Beach Press-Telegram: “A rotating light reflector hung suspended from the ceiling below what seemed like a two-story-tall hanging of the Stones’ famous ‘tongue poster,’ flanked on either side by closed-circuit screens to benefit those who were unable to see the stage (practically everyone).”
