The heralded Palladium gig was expected to
be a small-venue smash, but by all press accounts it failed to ignite the
“burning” experience later proclaimed on a classic TMOQ vinyl release. That recording (subsequently available on a
rare Japanese CD) captured most of a standard 15-song set, but our assembled
clippings now reveal that the Stones also came back onstage to do a previously
unregistered encore of Honky Tonk Women. Under the rules of this exercise, the direct reference in the
first review (LA Free Press) is insufficient evidence by itself,
but the reinforcing “back for an encore” report in the third clipping (Women’s
Wear Daily) pushes the song over the threshold, albeit just barely.

didn’t even dress to kill, or even maim, as he wore a plain blue denim shirt
over his skin tight slacks. He soon shed his shirt to reveal an even more
nondescript T-shirt.” Opening:

STP: “a fairly mediocre show” Cash Box: “Fact is, their first L.A. show (at the Palladium) lacked
electricity.” Women’s Wear Daily: “While in the VIP Gold Room, rock
managers, Stones staff and special guests guzzled booze in smug satisfaction.
Beamed one of the management team, ‘Every night is a sellout. We’ve even
added matinees. If it weren’t for the Stones, these days would be over.’” |
